Workwear - The safety and health issues for women in the construction industry in the U.S.

The United States is responsible for health and safety matters within the jurisdiction of the Department of Labour, Health and Safety Administration in the U.S. (OSHA). In the construction industry is not the input provided by the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH), an independent group that provides an additional perspective to issues OSHA safety in construction. Usually, when a risk assessment has been carried out and it was decided PPE is necessary for workers little thought has been devoted to the following account:· Is it correct and appropriate for the risks involved and the environment in which to use?·

Do you prevent or adequately control the risks involved without increasing the overall level of risk?· Have you considered the health of employees using the PPE?· What are the needs of the job and the requirements it imposes on the company, for example, limited vision, the duration of the PPE should be used and the physical demands of PPE places on the user?·

The appropriate level of training can be provided if required? If you ask these fundamental questions would have been twenty years ago many women protest in the construction industry in the United States, women undoubtedly Chicago (CWIT - Chicago Women in Trades) and these women make their voices heard in NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health). Unfortunately, many of the issues raised then still not been satisfactorily resolved.

As PPE women complained that there was little or no smaller sizes available - Considering the first point in the list above and the second effect and the fourth point also, the complaint could be resolved easily if comfort and fit was in the mind of the head of PPE buyer.Clothing size is inherently dangerous! However, employers consider that comply with industry standards and that women have been whining for reasons "fashion / adjustment" instead of security.

Clothing or equipment that are not size or does not fit well can compromise personal safety. It also may not be effective in the way it was designed. The report notes that "poor fit compromises the protection offered by clothing or equipment. Lack of appropriate PPE and PPC can cause security risks and health consequences for women and smaller men, based on clothing and protective equipment to help keep them safe.Having inadequate or ill-fitting clothing, boots, gloves or safety equipment present a security risk to all workers.

"It seems that there has been little effort to account for lower physical dimensions of women and protective clothing, such as ear, head and face sizes. Gloves Shoes and women were often inadequate or inappropriate for workers construction, which could be due to lack of availability (ie, manufacturers and distributors do not store), limited availability or lack of awareness among employers and employees in the event of equipment designed for body structure A woman can get. This is not a sufficient excuse.
